For those who may not know me, my name is Lena Josifi and I am a junior majoring in Neuroscience and Chemistry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. One day, I hope to become a doctor and help improve the lives of others. But these days, when I'm not in class, studying, or running for the Varsity Track and Cross Country teams, I spend much of my free time in Dr. Dai Chung’s Neuroblastoma Research Lab in hopes of getting one step closer towards novel discoveries relating to this specific pediatric cancer.

Neuroblastoma is the leading cause of cancer deaths in infants. Despite its high occurrence, there is still very little known about its origins and about its development in children.  Over the last year and a half at the lab, I have been studying a derivative of vitamin A, called Retinoic Acid, in hopes of further elucidating the mechanism by which it exerts its effects as a therapeutic. With each day of research, progress is made.

As a runner, I understand that with each day of training, one gets stronger and closer to his or her goals. I also know that it takes both dedication and perseverance to get to the finish line. Children diagnosed with neuroblastoma and their families endure their own marathon of trials with the obstacles of cancer. In support of these families, I am running the Disney Half Marathon on January 8, 2010 to raise $5,000 for neuroblastoma research. With your help, we both can make a difference and get one step closer to a cure.

Your support would mean so much to the families we will be helping and to me. Please remember that no donation is too small to make a difference in the life of a child! Click the button to donate online today!
